I love you Father.

I forget a lot.

I also remember a lot.

September 11, 2001 is a date nobody in America forgets. I was up all night with a sick baby. I turned on the T.V. only to find news coverage of a burning building. I quickly turned it off not wanting to focus on anything of importance. I went back to bed. When I woke up a little more rested and with a clear mind it then registered. My world had changed.

However I had not. I got down on my knees and prayed, but the intensity with which I prayed was no different than the day before. The subject matter was just a lot different. I didn’t need a tragedy to remember my God. I remember him every day.

I am grateful every day for all those who sacrifice for my freedom of worship.

Take some time.
Tell your Father that you love him.
Try to remember his love for you.

Here is a great message for today and always.

Happy Mail

You’ve heard of snail mail,
E-mail,
junk mail,
and even birthday mail.
I want you to know about my new discovery.
Happy Mail.

Happy mail is what I send to

my hubby from time to time.
I like to help him get through his work day,
and remember what he is working for.
Can’t wait until our next getaway.
The alone time we had on the beach
in California last month
was totally completely awesome.

Thriftstore Fashion

I totally don’t get it.
There are women out there
who have dedicated whole blogs
to their clothes.
It’s so very strange to me.

I thought I should try it,
to see if I could catch the bug.

I first give you
two views.
You always have to pose
in every possible position
you know.

Read more for the backside view.

The backside.

This is what I look like with
the things that matter most.
And it ain’t the clothes.
Just in case you were wondering.

I sure do love my beautiful Bella.
She is my best accessory.
And baptized.

Guess what?
I paid $3 at Savers thriftstore
for this fabulousness.

The outfit is $3,
not the daughter,
just in case you were confused.

And if you add the 10 months
of pregnancy
and 10 hours of labor,
and 8 years of mothering
to the complete
package,
I think I am coming out
pretty much ahead of
all the other ladies.

Check out I’m a thriftaholic.
I do actually like looking
at what people can put together for
cheap or free.

But we all know my outfit
wasn’t cheap.
Having and raising babies
costs more than all of our clothes combined.

Potter Gold

Have I ever told you about the time
that I told LG that I thought Potter
would be a really cool first name for a boy?
I like surnames for boys.

LG looked at me
and said,
“Seriously?”

“Yeah, seriously.”

“Alice. Think harder.”

Me: “What?”

“Potter?”

“Yeah Potter.
Isn’t it cute?”

LG:
“Hmm. Potter.”
(giving me more time to think)
“Potter Gold.”
(said with his best British accent)

Me:
“Oh no!
Well, maybe someone else can use it.”

One, it just can’t go with Gold.
Two, everyone knows
we will never get a boy.

Here are some more photos of our
farewell to Potter.

Me and my main man.
Before the party.

Me as Bellatrix.
I love how this photo turned out.
Don’t mine the cleavage please.
Don’t mess with me.

This is Launi.
It was her party that we attended
for our final Potter premiere.

LG at the party.

I so wanted to use the real word on his shirt.
Maybe if we were still in TN.
I decided to censor
Mrs. Weasley’s
B word.
Making me a better mother.

Here is Mad Eye Moody
as a boy.

Harry Potter comes to the 21st
century as a middle aged boxer.

All the prizes.

The sorting hat.

Hagrid and Mrs. Trelawney.
I never knew they were married.
Doesn’t LG look so excited
about our big date night.
Thanks for being a good sport honey.
I wish LG could have figured out a way to
smuggle home Dobby.

Yummy couldron cakes
from Sweet Tooth Fairy.

Here is Lyndi Lou.
Launi is her mom.
I’m her visiting teacher.
I love this man.
I think that
Gryffindor’s beanie works for him.

Not quite the same.
But close enough.

Caroline sports Tom Riddle’s diary
for the matinee the next day.

Abigail pretending she is about
to get on the Hogwart’s Express.

Bella is as close as we are going to get
to having a real Potter Gold.

Laugh Out Loud

Thanks to Jennifer
for facebooking  this one
from Crossville, TN.
Living vicariously
here in Utah,
is the only way
I can get my
church sign fix.
There are so many things I miss about the South.
My in-laws.
My sister.
My friends.
The kids’ schools
and the familiar faces there.

Today I am really missing
Sister Schubert’s rolls.

Yesterday the girls were
making a fuss over a bug that
got into the kitchen.

LG reasoned with them.
“C’mon guys,
you grew up in the South,
this little bug is nothin’.”

I made a mental note
to enjoy Utah’s
buglessness
a little more.

Waiting

I am waiting on a phone call
that will change my life.
I don’t know what it will be like to be a working mom
and I am nervous about it,
but I am also assured from mighty prayer
that God is watching over me
and will strengthen me.
I was just thinking about how much I hate waiting.
I’ve never been too good at waiting.
Give me my future NOW dangit.
Don’t make me wait.
And then instead of worrying about
whether or not the phone call is going to come,
I giggled some with Caroline,
and made her favorite treat.
A bottle of milk.
Yes, she is two and still gets a bottle.
Then I sat down to read some scripture online.
I need to do my dailies.
And what pops up?
LG’s pandora radio.
I guess he made it happen automatically.
And waiting became an all new experience,
as I listened intently to LG’s favorites.
I wondered how I can sing more like
Sarah McLachlan or Natalie Merchant.
And a broad smile conquers all
when I hear
Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
It is such a beautiful song.
And it played three times
while I was getting my root canal.
I imagined I was on the beach,
and made sure the dentist knew
that my husband hates that glitch in pandora.
Sometimes it plays the same songs over and over again.
The older I get, the better I get at waiting.
In fact, if you think about it,
all of the good things in my life
have happened while I was waiting on what’s next.
Waiting is the best place to be.

September’s Give Away

A while back I won.
Here are the girls sporting the spoils.
Funny that you can barely see the brown headband
when it blends in with the hair on Bella’s head.
I was so happy to get some
of Heather’s signature pieces.
So very cute.
{keep reading for the give-away}

Like oh my gosh!
(Heather will appreciate the valley girl talk
she loved the 80’s)
I was even more delightfully surprised when
she didn’t just send me one as promised
in the give-away,
but one for each of the girls.
Woo hoo. Bonus.
The giveaway was hosted
on a blog called scraps and scribbles.
Heather’s facebook page is called
Go and like her, just to be nice.
Her crocheted stuff is awesome.
Check out her little cell phone purses.
They would be a great Christmas gift for that pre-teen
that only wants clothes and wants to pick them out herself
leaving her with only some cash under the tree.
I know from experience.
Get a little purse for the gift cards and cash
so big sister won’t be bummed out on Christmas Day.

Now on to the giveaway.
I know that’s the part you really care about.

I made friends with Shannon in Nashville
a few years back
when visiting Kristy Faye.
KFaye is one of my besties from high school days.
Shannon is now KFaye’s new bestie.
And Shannon is uber creative.
She sells her stuff
creativelyrecycledbyshannon
on facebook.

She makes cute things from recycled materials.

She has single rose clips for $5 (headband $7),

triple rose for $9 (headband $11),
adjustable rings for $5,
Hairbows for $5,
and necklaces start at $12…..

But guess what?
Shannon has already made something
that she has graciously offered
to one of my readers for
FREEEEEEEEE.

The giveaway is a triple rose alligator clip that can be used in hair, on a headband or even on a shirt as an accessory as well as a matching adjustable ring.  Both items are made out of shirts.

All you have to do is like Shannon’s page on facebook.
and then leave a comment here.
3 clicks, I made it easy for you.
I hate those giveaways that tell you to do about 20 bazillion things.
That’s not a giveaway. That’s slave labor.
But really you have to go like Shannon
cause it’s her giveaway.
If you don’t have facebook, just leave a comment.
I am double dipping and this give away
is counting as my game this month.
So in your comment give me a link
to a craft that you’ve made that you are the most proud of.
Or if you are like me, the least proud of. tee hee
If you have no online presence,
then just tell me about it.
Just try to make me laugh, will ya?
I thought it would be so cute to send Shannon
some of Caroline’s outgrown clothes
and pay her to make me some keepsake flowers.
She would probably be game for something like that.
You can e-mail her directly
shansharris at gmail

Anyhow, I will be leaving the give-away open all month
and then will randomly pick a winner from all the comments
first thing in October.
Me screaming: OCTOBER, how did you get here so fast?

If you really want to be nice,
you can tell your friends.
I never tell my friends because I
don’t like to lower my chances for the win.
Rude, I know,
but strategic, yes.
So, don’t tell your friends about the giveaway,
but do tell them about Shannon and Heather.
They deserve a shout-out or two.

Book Review – The Key of Kilenya (on Kindle)

The Key of Kilenya
by Andrea Pearson
3 out 5 stars.
My husband got a kindle for his birthday which allowed me to do my first e-book read. Even though I didn’t think I would, I really love the Kindle. The other day, I heard a man say that he likes the feel of a book in his hands, and I used to say the same thing. But I changed my mind. Don’t knock it ’til you try it. A book is about the words on the page and the Kindle is awesome. You never lose your page. You can look definitions of words up with a tap. Convenient and enlightening.
But on with the real point of the post. Here is what I thought about The Key of Kilenya.

This book reminded me a lot of the kids’ series by Suzanne Collins called Gregor the Overlander. The main plot of the book being this kid named Jacob travels to another alternate world by accident. He discovers that a race of people have been waiting on him to help them find a magical and powerful key that was stolen by the bad guys. I imagine this race of magical people to be a mix between Native Americans and Ewoks.

The book takes you through the adventures of Jacob. He meets all kinds of different creatures (some good, some bad). Jacob discovers that he has powers and he builds some close friendships (two of which remind me of the Ron and Hermione – which was fun).
The book had a lot of imagination in it. I enjoyed the stretch for me. I am not a reader of fantasy, so the fact that I enjoyed the book at all may mean that you fantasy lovers will be really pleased.
For some reason which I have yet to figure out, I didn’t connect with this book like I wanted; it could be just a writing style thing. At the beginning of every chapter there was a short excerpt from a journal which wasn’t explained until halfway through the book. This felt really disjointed. I think the author’s writing actually improved throughout the book and by the middle I was more drawn to the story-line and reading for the sake of curiosity. I was immersed into the story, but I was impatient in how long it took for me to get there.
There were a lot of phenomenons that went unexplained (frozen bodies that made up a wall, a mad man that throws nuts, hundreds of present individuals of all species that only Jacob can see) which displeased me. I like everything to fit together in a neat little package, as smoothly as JK does it. And I don’t want to have to wait until the 7th book for the subplots to work out. I did love the characters though, but felt like they lacked emotion which kept me from totally immersing myself with my ability to relate.
I will most definitely read the next book in the series. The author left a cliffhanger (which I am NOT happy about). I felt much like I did after the 2nd movie in The Lord of the Rings. And since I just finished reading the book a few hours ago my emotions are still pretty raw.
Definitely worth the read. And you can purchase your own e-copy for just 99 cents. When you do, come back and help me understand my confusion in this review. I am sorry to the talented author Andrea Pearson. This is probably the worst review I have ever done. I should have entitled it “I liked it, but…well, I just don’t know”.

Buy the book here.

Visit the author Andrea Pearson.

I did receive a copy of this book for free and gave this totally useless review in return. My apologies. My complicated opinions were really just a result of my mood today and I was not swayed at all by the free-ness of the book.
